Finding Joy After the Storm

Updated: Aug 16

After a long period of hardship or abuse, joy can feel like a stranger. You might even feel guilty for wanting to be happy or fear that joy will not last. This is normal. When you have been on high alert for a long time, happiness can seem unsafe. The mind is used to scanning for danger and the body is used to bracing for impact.

Finding joy again starts with giving yourself permission to feel it in small ways. Look for moments that are light and gentle, not overwhelming. It might be the warmth of your favourite drink in the morning or the sight of the sun breaking through the clouds. These moments are not distractions from healing. They are part of it. Joy rewires the brain to believe that life can hold goodness again.

From a life coaching perspective, joy is not something you wait for, it is something you practise. The more you notice and appreciate small moments, the more you train your mind to recognise them. Over time, joy becomes less of a surprise and more of a steady presence. After the storm, joy is the sunlight that helps you grow into the person you were always meant to be.

Life Coaching Tips:

Start a joy diary. Each day write down one small moment that made you smile or feel lighter. It could be as simple as a warm cup of tea or the sound of birds in the morning. Over time this will retrain your mind to notice and trust the presence of joy in your life again.
