When life feels challenging, it’s easy to focus on what’s missing the skills we don’t have, the opportunities that never came, the things that went wrong. But what if, instead of looking at what’s lacking, we started with what’s already strong?
The Strengths Based Approach is about flipping the script. Instead of trying to “fix” yourself first, you identify and amplify the qualities you already excel at. When you build on your natural abilities, you grow faster, stay more motivated, and face challenges with confidence.
Why the Strengths Based Approach Works
Many people believe personal growth means tackling weaknesses head-on. While there’s value in developing new skills, research shows we achieve more and enjoy the process when we use our strengths daily.
This approach works because it:
Boosts Confidence – You start from a place of capability rather than inadequacy.
Increases Motivation – Doing what you’re naturally good at feels energising, not draining.
Drives Better Results – When you work from your strengths, you perform at a higher level.
It’s not about ignoring weaknesses; it’s about putting your strongest foot forward while finding ways to manage or work around less-developed areas.
How to Use the Strengths Based Approach
You can start identifying and using your strengths with a few simple steps:
1. Discover Your Core Strengths
Reflect on moments when you felt proud, capable, or deeply engaged. You might also use tools like the VIA Character Strengths Survey or CliftonStrengths assessment.
2. Recognise Patterns of Success
Look back at times you’ve overcome challenges or achieved goals. What skills, qualities, or attitudes helped you get there?
3. Apply Strengths to Current Goals
Ask yourself: How can I use my best qualities to move towards my current objectives? For example, if creativity is your strength, how can you bring it into problem-solving at work?
4. Showcase Your Strengths Daily
Find small, consistent ways to use your strengths in everyday life. This could be through your job, hobbies, relationships, or even community involvement.
Example: Turning a Strength into a Success Story
Imagine your main strength is communication. You could:
Volunteer to give presentations at work.
Start a blog or podcast to share your expertise.
Use your communication skills to build stronger networks, opening doors to career opportunities.
The more you use this strength, the more it grows and the more confident you become in new challenges.
Coaching Insight
Focusing on strengths isn’t about avoiding growth in weaker areas it’s about starting where your energy flows most naturally. Often, using your strengths will indirectly improve your weaker areas because you’ll approach them with more confidence and a positive mindset.
The Strengths Based Approach invites you to look at yourself with kindness and curiosity. Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with me?” ask, “What’s strong in me?” and watch how your life changes when you lead with your best qualities.
